Keeping Busy While Sitting Cozy

The way I see it, weekends are for lounging. My Saturday routine often starts at around 9:30 in the morning, when I wake up and make myself a coffee. Then I head to the couch and post up while I flip through the channels to find something entertaining. I’ll scope out Bravo, TLC, HGTV - you know, the quality television channels. If I don’t like what I see, I’ll check out what’s on Netflix or Hulu. Once I settle on something, I sit back and relax. While all of this is going on, my boyfriend is usually in the corner playing video games (shout-out to you Rocket League players out there).

A couple hours later (closer to half an hour sometimes), I’ll fall asleep. I’m telling you, my couch is insanely comfortable. I have no control. I don’t ever regret my naps, but once in awhile I do wonder if I’ve slept away the day.

So on days when I want to fight the urge to sleep on the couch but not doing anything crazy like venture out into the world, I like to do something with my hands. Nothing that requires a ton of brainpower, just enough to keep myself upright and interested. Plus, my therapist has suggested that doing something with your hands can distract your mind from overthinking or stressing (if you’re having one of those days).

One activity I like to partake in is playing with Play-doh. It’s a relatively mess-free activity and it flexes my creativity a bit. It’s also something you can do while the TV is on or you’re listening to music or hanging out with a friend. I find it very relaxing.

I bought this nice box of assorted Play-doh colors (yep, from the toys section of Target). I also bought a few extra colors that didn’t come in the set because they were pretty.

What do I make when I’m feeling crafty? I like to try and make flowers or silly animals. Things that I can end up leaving around the home as mini decorations.

Basic Tip: Even though it doesn’t leave a huge mess, Play-doh can get stuck in table grooves so I would suggest using something like a sheet of paper or a plate to craft your mini sculptures on. Plus, if you use paper, it makes for easy clean up.

Also, now that I am a mature adult, I make sure to secure the lids and keep the colors separate unless I’m combining them to make something awesome. And when I’m not using the Play-doh, I keep the set in the drawer of my coffee table for easy access.

If you haven’t sculpted with Play-doh since you were a kid, give it a go and see what you can make!
