Midi Dresses: The Snuggies of Business Casual

Happy Autumn, everyone!

I’m among the many who love this time of year. I’m pumped to wear layers and scarves and booties and blazers…all that good stuff. I also can’t wait to enjoy soups and candy and chill under holiday lights…I could go on and on! Anyhoo, let’s focus on the stars of this post - midi dresses!

Midi dresses land around the knee or just below. For me, this style often ends up looking like a maxi dress because I stand high and mighty at (only) 5 feet. I know this style is typically for spring and summer, but I plan on carrying it with me into the fall.

Dresses in general are great because you can just throw them on and look effortlessly stylish. Plus, depending on their fabric and structure, dresses can be very comfortable. The main drawback for me? Chaffing. Oh, also a sweaty butt. To curb these issues, I like to wear long bike shorts or ~smoothing~ NOT suffocating spanx. Alternatively, you can put deodorant down there, which helps a bit too, just saying.

Here’s why midi dresses are the ideal length of dress to wear to work:

  • They’re long enough that you don’t have to worry about bending over or hearing conservative coworkers question your professional attire.

  • If your office likes to blast air conditioning, midi dresses can provide your legs with a bit more coverage. Long dresses can do this too, but I like that you don’t have to hike up a midi dress when you climb the stairs.

  • You look like you spent a lot of time getting ready, but really, you just threw something on. And since they’re in style at the moment, you look like you are super on-trend.

In the spring and summer, I tend to wear my midi dresses with a ponytail or bun, a colored lip balm, and slip-on sneakers or mules. If the midi I’m wearing is loose, I’ll slip a belt around my waist to dress it up a bit for work. If it’s a tight-fitting midi and I’m a little shy about wearing it on its own, I’ll throw on a lightweight or sheer cardigan.

Now that we’re heading into the cozier months, here are ways to style your midi dress so that you stay warm and chic:

  • Tights, leggings, or socks to add warmth

  • Booties, loafers, or thigh high boots to keep my feet cozy and covered

  • Cardigans, blazers (yass!), or pullovers for layering

  • Eyeliner or lipsticks in deep colors (purple, brown, burgundy)

  • Hair down, in braids, or half-up

I’ll be sure to post pics on Instagram of ways I style my midi dresses. I’d love to see how you rock yours!
