TV Shows to Fall Asleep to

I just noticed that Netflix has a section titled ‘Casual Viewing’...they basically make a visual version of this blog topic. But I’m going to do this post anyways.

To me, casual viewing is the same thing as nap shows. What can I throw on that’s interesting enough for me to choose to watch but also not plot-driven enough that it requires me to watch intently? Also, what shows are soothing to the ears? I’d prefer the accompanying music to be more like elevator jazz than top 40 hits. And it’d be nice for the voices to sound pleasant and nondescript.

Let me set the stage. It’s Saturday afternoon. You have no plans until a casual dinner at 8pm down the street. You went to the gym to do some light fitness in the morning so you feel you’ve earned a good nap. And, what do ya know, the lighting is just right. You sprawl out on the couch, tuck a pillow under your head, and settle in for a solid sleep sesh.

TLC, HGTV, and the Food Network are cable channels worth scoping out for nap time. Netflix and Hulu also have some choice options. Consider House Hunters International, Fixer Upper, Amazing Interiors, and other home and garden shows when you want pleasant voices and music. Stay away from Property Brothers. They’re too energetic for my napping taste.

If you want something more fashion-related, try Say Yes to the Dress, Project Runway, or 100% Hotter (yeah, it’s like a kitchier version of What Not to Wear with more variety). Although, sometimes the latter two shows have too much pettiness for me to gently fall asleep to.

I only watch food shows if I’ve eaten beforehand, otherwise I’ll just get hangry. No Reservations, The Pioneer Woman, or Barefoot Contessa are my go-to options.

If someone were to ask me what I'm really good at, I'd say napping.

If you like makeup, I’d suggest heading over to Lisa Eldridge’s channel and just watching her videos on auto-play. I mean, I love watching her when I’m totally awake and focused - do you see how much care she puts into making up her clients?! But I also love listening to her voice as I fall asleep (not in a creepy way).

And sometimes Friends will pop up on TV and I’ll fall asleep to it. I’ve seen all the episodes and the laughing is consistent enough that it doesn’t throw me off.

These are the types of shows I think make for good napping. What are your favorite choices?
